State Library Lecture Series

Two successful series of lectures were held in conjunction with recent exhibitions in the La Trobe Library's Irving Benson Hall.
The first series, which was arranged to coincide with the “Trade Unions in Australian Society” exhibition, consisted of lectures by Clarrie O'Shea, former State Secretary of the Australian Tramway and Motor Omnibus Employees’ Association; Linda Rubinstein, Research Officer for the Federated Liquor and Allied Industries Employees’ Union of Australia; and John Halfpenny, State Secretary of the Amalgamated Metalworkers’ and Shipwrights’ Union. Mr. O'Shea spoke on the history of trade unions in Australia, Ms Rubinstein addressed the topic of women and unions while Mr. Halfpenny discussed the relationship between unions and politics.
The second series of lectures was held during the exhibition on gold in Victoria, “Dreams of a Golden Harvest”. Professor Graeme Davison gave an illustrated lecture on goldrush Melbourne and Dr. Douglas Kemsley spoke on “Miner's rights and the right to mine”.
The lectures, all held on Sunday afternoons, were all well attended and were judged a great success. The Library expects to publish the talks and news of their availability will be given in a future issue.

Library Council of Victoria Publications

The latest publication by the Library Council of Victoria is a bibliography entitled Australian art and artists to 1950: a bibliography based on the holdings of the State Library of Victoria. Compiled by Elizabeth Hanks, the work covers books, pamphlets, exhibition catalogues and periodical articles on Australian art and artists published before 1951. Although most of the items listed in the bibliography are works about Australian art and artists in the broad subject areas of painting, drawings and prints, and sculpture, books and pamphlets written or illustrated by Australian artists are also included. It is priced at $20 plus postage.
The bibliography and information about other publications by the Library Council are available from Patsy Hardy, Publications Officer, State Library of Victoria, 328 Swanston Street, Melbourne.

Australian Joint Copying Project

The Australian Joint Copying Project has recently produced a second supplement to part 8 of the A.J.C.P. Handbook which lists the Miscellaneous, or M series, films of material of Australian interest in the British Isles held outside the Public Record Office, London.
By far the largest collection represented in the supplement is the records of the United Society for Propagation of the Gospel covering the period 1778–1952. These records form one of the most important sources on the work of the Anglican Church in Australia and the Pacific.
Other important material listed in the supplement includes convict records from the Corporation of London Record Office; records relating to Australian trade from the London Chamber of Commerce; letters from the Zoological Society of London concerning the discovery of new species of animals in Australia; the papers of Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1836–76, which include letters from colonial governors and others in Australia; miscellaneous material of Australian interest from the National Library of Scotland and from the Dorset Record Office.
The A.J.C.P. Handbook is available for consultation within the La Trobe Library.

Membership of the Friends of the La Trobe Library

It is pleasing to note that membership of the Friends now stands at 378, a net increase of 96 in the space of less than a year. The main credit for this must go to Mr. John Arnold who has pursued a campaign of writing to potential members asking them to join. The results of his letters as noted above bode well for the Friends’ future.
