No 70 Spring 2002

A single sheet in Lawson's handwriting (identical to that of 'A Child in the Dark'). The thick paper has been kept folded, and a portion lost through wear. No poem with this title was ever published. In a letter to the Bulletin, 3 January 1903, Lawson said that he had 'whisky on board', and it was generally believed that he had fallen through being drunk. However, in an undated note to Mary Gilmore from hospital, he wrote: 'I jumped over to get out of it - hadn't a revolver'. In a letter to Dr Frederick Watson on 31 March 1916 he referred to 'that mad (?) attempt at suicide'. [handwritten manuscript, one page]
